Vinohrady, the residential area in the centre of Prague

Video of Vinohrady area

Vinohrady is probably the most famous residential area in Prague.
Architecture is varied, you can admire buildings of different styles, mainly Neo-Renaissance, Neo-Gothic, Pseudo Baroque and Art Nouveau, many of them have already been renovated after decades of decline. The result is magnificent.

      Church of the Most Sacred
Heart of our Lord

Many think it is in Prague 2, but actually it also covers Prague 3 and 10.

It used to be covered with vineyards, hence the name, which in Czech means that. After that it has been an independent city and just in 1922 it became part of Prague.
From the city centre , getting to Vinohrady is very easy: Tram or Metro and in a matter of minutes you're there, far from the tourist and in the middle of the 'real Prague". It is always wrong to define a place the real one, of course, but everybody feels the difference when a part of the city shows no sign of massive tourism. It's kind of breathing, kind of "that's what I was looking for". Many will know what I mean, many won't and I invite them to go there. They will.

    Žižkov TV Tower

Although our recommendation is to enjoy Vinohrady without a plan, you may prefer to know what's around. Here you have a short list of the main attractions:

Jirího z Podebrad Square (Námestí Jirího z Podebrad), Church of the Most Sacred Heart of our Lord, Mánesova Street, Žižkov TV Tower, Vinohrady Market Hall (Vinohradská tržnice), Námestí Míru (Peace Square)

Námestí Míru (Peace Square) Námestí Míru Námestí Míru Theatre

There are then parks and cemeteries to see:
Riegrovy sady Park, Havlíckovy sady Park, Vinohrady Cemetery (Vinohradský hrbitov), New Jewish Cemetery (Nový židovský hrbitov), Olšany Cemetery (Olšanské hrbitovy),

The restaurants

Eat where locals eat and that's what you get: real Czech atmosphere, good food, low prices. Vinohrady is full of great restaurants.
